Editorial Philosophy—

Fiction is the lifeblood of Cheap Imitation. Most of our pages are filled by fiction that is sourced from our open submission call.

However, our editorial philosophy for fiction submissions is the same as the philosophy of the journal.

We're looking for fiction that's innovative or new, or fiction that does things or says things we truly haven't seen before.

Fresh perspectives, or fresh explorations of perspectives we're used too.

We want to be knocked on our ass. We want to be jealous of you. We want to wish we had wrote it first.

More than anything, we want fiction that is original, and that is artistically/aesthetically complete.

We also are drastically more likely to select your work for publication if it fits with the theme of the issue

.

Until October 10th we are accepting submissions for our inaugural issue.

The Forthcoming Issue—

Issue One: (dis)continuity

a break in the natural order of things

image distorted into meaning;

meaning deconstructed, put back in place, and made anew.

Introduction—

Cheap Imitation is seeking original, unpublished poetry for publication in our journal.

Poetry is a place of innovation, frequently willing to challenge convention in regards to everything from form, to voice, to subject matter. We are looking for bold, purposeful examples of the kind of unapologetic originality almost inherent to the medium. We invite you to lean into the strange, with every choice you make justifying its own presence within the poem's uniquely confined space.

(Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but must be specified.)

Visual Art Submission Guidelines

Cheap Imitation is seeking original visual art for publication in our journal.

We welcome art of any medium, provided it actively seeks to engage with the theme of the current issue (see below), and can be submitted as an image. All visual art submissions are also considered for the cover of the magazine, and if we think your work may be a good fit, we will note that potential opportunity in our response.
